Can you imagine your beloved child lies dying and your one, last hope has been delayed? You might be overwhelmed with panic and want to scream, “Hurry! Hurry! Hurry!” I imagine this is how Jairus felt as he walked with Jesus. His precious daughter was on her deathbed and he approached Jesus asking for his help. Jesus had agreed and started with Jairus toward his house but there had been a distraction. Not only was there a massive crowd following Christ, but a woman had touched him and been healed. Jesus had taken precious time to stop and talk with the woman while Jairus looked on helplessly. Minutes were ticking by and Jairus wanted to urge Jesus to move quickly.
As Jairus stood there, some people came from his house. By the expression on their faces he could tell the news was not good. Mark 5:35 says, “‘Your daughter is dead’, they said. ‘Why bother the teacher anymore?'” Grief swept over Jairus and his heart froze inside. His darling 12 year old daughter was gone.
Jesus overheard what they said. He looked at Jairus, “Don’t be afraid; just believe.”
Jairus had just witnessed the woman, who had been bleeding for 12 years, healed of her affliction and yet, as a father, he was despondent over the loss of his little girl. He said nothing but walked toward home with Jesus at his side. Before they even reached the house, the sound of wailing and mourning reached his ears. It swept over him and the reality struck him but Jesus had said, “Don’t be afraid; just believe.”
Jesus looked at the mourners as they wept and cried. Mark 5:39 tells us, “He went in and said to them, ‘Why all this commotion and wailing? The child is not dead but asleep.'” The crowd looked at him and laughed. How could he say such a thing when the girl’s lifeless body lie inside? Jesus put the people out of the house. There would be no distractions now. He took 3 of his disciples, with Jairus and his wife, into the child’s room. Sitting on the bed, he took her hand and said, “Little girl, get up!”
Immediately she stood up and began to walk around. Jairus and his wife were astounded as they embraced their daughter weeping tears of joy. The prominent leader of the synagogue had witnessed not one but two miracles, 12 years in the making. God’s timing had been exact and precisely at the right moment.
Are you in a dire situation at this moment in time? Are you feeling anxious and is panic welling up inside you? You might be feeling God is delayed or maybe he doesn’t care about what you’re going through. God has the perfect time lined up for your miracle. Trust God and believe he knows what is best for your life. Just remember Jesus’ words to Jairus, “Don’t be afraid; just believe.”
